New Townscape: Vol. I
EPOK Gallery Stockport November 2016 Stockport’s New Art Gallery To Host Exhibition ‘New Townscape: Vol. I’ Exhibition dates: 17 November – 10 December 2016 Preview Evening: 18 November 2016, 6-9pm EPOK Gallery will be presenting a group exhibition of Urban Painting by artists based in Stockport and the North West. New Townscape: Vol. I will run from 18 November – 10 December 2016, with a Preview Evening reception on the 18th from 6-9pm. New Townscape: Vol. I is the beginning of an exploration into a new art movement, The New Townscape. “This was in no sense a planned agenda but a type of synergy; some emerging artists shared concern for the promise of urban life as the country experienced a polarization of wealth and poverty. These artists like a deliberately subversive act, found beauty in “subtopia”; the urban fringe where the rot had set in.” (David Chandler) EPOK has invited eight artists whose work is part of this movement: David Chandler, James Dyson, Tony Noble, Mandy Payne, Patricia Rainey-Edwards, Anne Samuel, J. Samuel-Bryan and Jackie Wagg. All are based in the North West and work in diverse media, including oil and aerosol on concrete in Payne’s case. Curated by J. Samuel-Bryan, the exhibition came from an instinctive grouping of certain artists’ work and then an insight into what it was that was linking them together. All the artists featured investigate, study and document their urban surrounding with intense appreciation, and even love, for what they see. Townscapes continuously evolve, with buildings being knocked down or built constantly, and most of it is unseen as we pass them without looking. The New Townscape artists, however, are looking. Through recreating the townscapes in their art these artists are learning about the lives of the towns around us. “The New Townscape: Vol. 1” will run until the 10th December. The artists will be present at the opening reception on Friday 18th November from 6-9pm. Gallery hours are Thursday-Sunday, 11-4pm and by appointment.
